Each piece in the Arte Di Legno collection has been hand carved on a very special species of wood: Paulownia. This wood can be traced back to 200 A.D. when, in Asia, a seedling was planted celebrating the birth of a daughter. At the time of her marriage, the tree was cut down and made into a prized wedding chest. They also believed that when the tree was planted close to the house that the Phoenix would come and bring them good luck. Paulownia wood is an extraordinary material and is today noted for its strength in relationship to its light weight. In fact, Paulownia has been proven to have the highest strength to weight ratio of any wood in the world. The wood is fine-grained, soft and warp resistant.
