had to attach bed frame to unit with my own wood so the unit would not fall over on the person sleeping in the bed. If I would not have attached the eight inch pieces of wood, the mattress would have been under the bookcase. Very disappointed in that construction problem

Look - I'm an engineer and my father in-law makes furniture as a hobby and we had difficulty. I'll admit to rushing a bit, but I had just put together the bed with my father in-law much more quickly than most experiences that I had read. But this headboard - with it's symetrical design and the instructions which kept looking at the pieces from different perspectives - led me to undo several steps and I still ended up with an unfinished edge facing forward. A better design would have arranged the connections in an unsymmetrical manner so it would be impossible to put pieces in backwards. My father in law cut a trim piece and stained it to match so the unit looks great now. My bad - honestly, anybody can put this piece together, just keep an eye on the picture of the finished product while you follow the directions and take your time to identify what is front/back and left/right and you'll be fine.

about the assembly; the dowel pins came through the head board and damaged the veneer of the finish. Not a happy camper about that. A brand new piece of furniture and it top is all messed up.
